EMDR FAQs

Is EMDR group therapy the same as individual EMDR?
Not exactly. The same principles of EMDR are used but adapted for a group format. You will process memories privately while being guided through the structured steps as part of the group. The group protocol that we use in this group is G-TEP, developed by Elan Shapiro (psychologist).

Do I have to share my trauma story with the group?
No. The group process is designed so that you do not disclose details of your trauma to others in the room nor will others share their trauma.

What if I become distressed during a session?
Both facilitators are experienced in helping people regulate and stay grounded. We will guide you through strategies to ensure you leave the session feeling safe. We also ask that people have some supports or a plan in place after sessions, as this provides ongoing support outside the group space. It also helps you to integrate the work beyond the sessions.

How do I know if group EMDR is right for me?
That’s what the application process is for. After reviewing your questionnaire, we’ll give you a phone call to connect, introduce ourselves, ensure the group is a good fit, and answer any initial questions.

Why group EMDR?

Research shows that EMDR can be effective in group formats, making this approach:

  • More affordable than individual therapy.

  • Supportive, as you are not alone in your healing.

  • Structured and safe, guided by trained facilitators.

  • Focused, with a clear beginning and end (three-session block).
